Kentucky high school basketball season pushed back to January 4 start; football playoffs to begin Friday

The Kentucky high school basketball season won’t begin next Monday as originally scheduled, but instead at the start of the new year.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett and the Board of Control met Wednesday and approved a motion to push the basketball season — as well as all winter sports — back to January 4.

As far as basketball goes, the regular season will tipoff January 4 with a seven-week slate, district tournaments will start March 1, regional tournaments will get underway March 8 and the Sweet Sixteen state tournaments are currently scheduled to take place March 17-21 and March 24-28 at Rupp Arena in Lexington — but those dates could be altered due to scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena.

In addition to the winter sports changes, the football playoffs will still begin this Friday and be played as scheduled. If needed, the KHSAA can make any schedule changes for the playoffs without having to discuss with the Board of Control.

This story will be updated with any new information.
