Edmonson County took down Metcalfe County at home, 23-21, for its first win of the season. Warren East was on the road last Friday night at Russell County and was trying to collect its first win on the year as well. Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was a 49-12 loss to the Lakers in Russell Springs.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
- Edmonson County: The Wildcats have a young man on offense that makes everyone just stop and say, “That man can run!” Matthew Shaw is an incredible running back that carries his team very strong to the victory line. Last week against Metcalfe, Shaw ran for three touchdowns, with 146 yards on 21 rushing attempts. Kicker Clay Walden made both PATs on the night but split a pair of field goal attempts. If he can work that leg and make every kick he attempts, it could be huge for this team.
- Warren East: Quarterback Nolan Ford is the leader of the Raiders but unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury last week at Russell County and isn’t expected to play Friday night. Ford threw for 124 yards and two TDs against the Lakers and also rushed for 69 yards. With Ford sidelined, look for backup Isaiah Ghee to start for the Raiders. Ghee came in and replaced Ford in the second half last week and finished 3-of-10 passing for 66 yards, while picking up 42 yards on six carries.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
If Warren East wants to come out on top in this one, it is going to have to play good defensively. The defensive line will have to stop the very talented running back Shaw from getting large gains on his runs. Special teams play needs to be good as well — some blocked kicks would be an awesome way to put this team over the edge to a win.
I think that if Edmonson County can stop the Warren East attack on the passing game, it will be a win for the Wildcats. The offense will have to play well too, but that isn’t the biggest objective that this team needs to achieve this week.
