For a program that hadn’t been on a stage like that in 12 years, Warren East certainly didn’t play scared.
The Lady Raiders, who made their first appearance in the Girls’ Region 4 Tournament since 2008 on Monday night at E.A. Diddle Arena, played one of their best games of the season and battled with the defending champion Barren County for three quarters, but the Trojanettes used a big fourth to prevail.
Trailing 42-28 entering the final period, Barren County kicked things into high-gear and outscored Warren East 31-13 – 19 of those points coming from senior guard Elizabeth Bertram – to complete the comeback with a 59-55 win and keep its season alive.
While Bertram finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the Trojanettes (27-7 overall), while Raven Ennis scored 16 points.
Lucy Patterson led the Lady Raiders, who finished their season at 18-11, with 16 points and Caroline Forrester registered a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Barren County will face Logan County in Friday’s 7:45 p.m. semifinal.
Warren East started hot and jumped out to a 12-1 lead at the 3:03 mark of the first quarter. Ennis’ 3-ponter helped Barren County cut its deficit to 14-7, but the Lady Raiders scored six of the final nine points of the frame to hold a 20-10 advantage after one.
The Trojanettes found a rhythm in the second, scoring four quick points to get within 20-14 before ultimately outscoring Warren East 12-4 in the frame to cut the Lady Raiders’ lead to 24-22 at halftime.
East opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to go up 30-22 at the 5:15 mark, and Patterson later scored five straight to give the Lady Raiders a 35-24 lead with 1:59 remaining in the period – and they were soon up 42-28 entering the fourth.
Barren County used a 6-1 run early into the final quarter to trim its deficit to 43-34, but Tanaya Bailey hit a 3 at the 5:28 mark to put Warren East in front 46-35.
Katie Murphy’s triple – followed by a pair of Bertram free throws – brought the Trojanettes within 47-44 with 4:01 remaining, and Bertram soon knocked down a 3 to even the scoreboard with 3:13 left.
Patterson made four straight free throws to give Warren East a 51-47 lead, and Forrester scored to make it 55-49 with 1:21 remaining.
Bertram hit four straight free throws of her own to bring Barren County within 55-53 with 43.2 seconds left, and then converted an and-one to put the Trojanettes up 56-55 with 24.8 seconds to go.
Warren East had the chance to tie or go for the win, but a turnover gave the ball back to Barren County and it hit a pair of clutch free throws to seal it.
