Gators close regular season with win over Edmonson County

It was a good tune-up game for Greenwood entering the postseason.

The Gators, hosting Region 3 team Edmonson County on Friday night in their regular-season finale, didn’t get anything easy and had to battle for a 71-60 win over the Wildcats on Senior Night at “The Swamp.”

Greenwood (17-13 overall) led 17-14 after the opening quarter but trailed 31-30 at halftime. The Gators were also down 47-45 after three complete periods but used a strong fourth – outscoring Edmonson County 26-13 – to come out on top with a second straight victory entering next week’s District 14 Tournament.

Peyton Loggins finished with 17 points to lead the Gators, who’ll play Bowling Green in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Marc Grant scored 15 and Cade Stinnett added 13.

Dalton Decker led the Wildcats (12-14) with 22 points.

The two sides played a competitive, back-and-forth first quarter as Greenwood held a tight 17-14 lead after eight minutes of action. Parker Williams hit a layup to give the Gators a 9-7 lead at the 2:22 mark, and Grant and Loggins later hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the frame.

Stinnett’s basket at the 5:10 mark of the second put Greenwood up 23-18, but the Wildcats – led by Decker – found a rhythm and cut their deficit to just 27-26 with 2:03 remaining in the half.

Loggins’ third triple put the Gators in front 30-28, but Trent Taylor fired back with one on the other end to send Edmonson County into the break leading 31-30.

The Wildcats opened the third quarter with five points in 53 seconds – highlighted by a Decker 3 – to take a 36-30 lead and force a quick Greenwood timeout. Chaz Wilson, who scored the other bucket during the 5-0 run, soon converted an and-one to make it 43-34 at the 4:35 mark.

Brakton Stinnett netted a deep ball to bring the Gators within 43-42 with 2:34 left in the period, but Decker soon closed it with a fast-break layup to send the Wildcats into the fourth up 47-45.

Cade Stinnett scored inside to give Greenwood a 56-49 lead with 3:58 remaining, and Ben Carroll knocked down his first 3 to make it 59-51 and seal it for the Gators.
