Lady Gators roll to 54-16 win over Franklin-Simpson

Leia Trinh scored a game-high 14 points and Megan Une finished with eight to lead the Greenwood girls’ basketball team to a dominant 54-16 win over Franklin-Simpson on Tuesday night at Greenwood High School.

“That was the biggest goal and the biggest focus all week in practice – this game was going to have to be the pace we wanted it to be,” Greenwood coach Zach Simpson said. “I thought for two-and-a-half, three quarters it was. We worked all week on our transition offense – and there were times it looked good and times it didn’t.”

The Lady Gators (9-6 overall jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 3:53 mark of the first quarter and led 18-3 after eight minutes of action. Greenwood then held Franklin-Simpson to just one point in the second period to take a 30-4 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Back-to-back Trinh 3-pointers put the Lady Gators up 40-4, and KK Keener knocked down one of her own to make it 43-6 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

“We shared the ball well and we shot pretty well from the field,” Trinh said. “It always feels good to win.”

Greenwood led 51-10 after three and ultimately cruised through the fourth to close out the lopsided victory.

Alera Barbee and Da’Ymah Hopson paced the Lady Wildcats (7-9) with four points each.

Both teams return to action Friday as Greenwood hosts Warren Central and Franklin-Simpson welcomes in Logan County. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.

“We still know that all year we’re playing for the district tournament,” Simpson said. “We’ve got a big one coming up on Friday, and we’ll get back to work tomorrow and be ready to roll.”
