Lady Purples roll to 63-40 win over Lady Gators

The Bowling Green girls’ basketball team remained hot Friday, rolling to a 63-40 win over Greenwood in District 14 action at Bowling Green High School. 

The Lady Purples (12-5 overall, 2-0 District 14) – winners of three straight – led 18-11 after the opening quarter, built a 34-17 advantage at halftime and cruised through the second half en route to another district victory.

Saniyah Shelton finished with 15 points to lead Bowling Green, while LynKaylah James scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Keyozdon Jones had 11 points and 11 boards.

Leia Trinh and Megan Une paced the Lady Gators (7-6, 0-3) with 8 points each.

The two sides exchanged scores over the first few minutes, but Bowling Green used a Shelton basket to take a 13-6 lead at the 2:41 mark of the first quarter. Rachel Evans’ 3-pointer brought Greenwood to within 14-11 with 50.8 seconds left in the period, but the Lady Purples scored four points in the final 7.4 seconds to lead 18-11 after one.

Bowling Green opened the ensuing frame with an 11-0 run – highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Meadow Tisdale – to build a 29-11 advantage at the 3:13 mark. Trinh’s and-one cut the Lady Gators’ deficit to 32-16, but the Lady Purples were still up 34-17 at the break.

James’ score inside at the 3:17 mark of the third gave Bowling Green a 44-24 lead, and two more buckets from the forward made it 50-27 with 1:54 left in the quarter. KK Keener made a 3 to bring Greenwood within 50-30, but James closed the period with yet another score to put the Lady Purples up 52-30 entering the fourth.

Another pair of scores by James – including a basket from Janiya Bailey – put Bowling Green up 60-38 with 5:30 left – and the Lady Purples remained in control from there. 

Both teams are back on the floor Saturday as Greenwood plays at Owensboro at 5 p.m. and Bowling Green hosts White House-Heritage (Tenn.) at 6 p.m. in the Border Battle Classic.
