Lady Dragons use late run to beat ACS in Kentucky 2A Tournament

A late 9-0 run led the Warren Central girls’ basketball team to a 37-28 win over Allen County-Scottsville in the Kentucky 2A Sectional Tournament on Monday night at Warren Central High School.

The Lady Dragons (5-9 overall) held a tight 26-22 lead after the third quarter but outscored Allen County-Scottsville 11-6 in the fourth to pull away and record their first win over the Lady Patriots since Feb. 15, 2011.

“Any win for us is good right now,” Warren Central coach Joe Hood said. “We’re almost halfway through the season, if not halfway through the season we’ve played 14, 15 games – so I’ve seen this coming from the summer. We kind of stalled out there at the beginning of the season and every time we kind of catch stride we kind of get set backwards a little bit.”

Taelor Leach led WCHS with 12 points and seven rebounds, while La Auhni Lewis and Krisheana Johnson each finished with 8 points.

“It was just fun playing with my team,” Leach said. “Just working together and getting our second (straight) win – we just won one on the road – so getting our second consecutive win we’re keeping up with our energy and keeping it all together as a team.”

Allison Meader paced Allen County-Scottsville (2-10) with 7 points.

The two sides played a competitive, back-and-forth opening half.

Kyleigh Ray’s 3-pointer gave Warren Central a 5-3 lead at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter, but Meador answered with one for Allen County-Scottsville to put it up 6-5 with 3:45 remaining in the period. The Lady Patriots led 10-9 after a basket from Meador, but Lewis’ score made it 11-10 Lady Dragons after one.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter as only eight total points were scored. Chloe Cook’s bucket put ACS up 14-13 with 2:45 left in the half, but Alyssa Conner hit a runner soon after to send Central into the break leading 15-14.

Taylor Carter’s pair of free throws evened the scoreboard at 22-22 at the 3:19 mark of the third, but Leach and Lewis scored the final four points of the quarter to give Warren Central a 26-22 lead entering the fourth.

Leach’s basket with 2:52 left gave the Lady Dragons their largest lead of the game at 31-24, and four more points from Johnson and Leach made it a 9-0 run and a 35-24 lead with just over a minute left to seal it.

Warren Central will face Warren East at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Section 2 final at Franklin-Simpson.

“I’m just gonna focus on practice tomorrow,” Hood said. “We’ve got so much stuff to clean up. We’re excited about playing in the 2A Sectional championship, but we’re more excited about getting our district started this year because that, at the end of the day, was what our goals were at the beginning of the year.”
