Gators grind out 55-53 win over Scotties in Purples Holiday Classic

One thing Greenwood has done quite well this season is making the most of big opportunities.

The Gators are continuing to do that.

Taking on Glasgow – another top Region 4 team – for the second time this month on Thursday night in the Purples Holiday Classic at Bowling Green, Greenwood competed at its highest level from start to finish, made the plays that mattered most and ultimately came out on top with a grinded-out 55-53 win.

The Gators (6-4 overall) trailed 53-51 with 1:10 remaining in the game, but Glasgow tied it with 47.6 seconds left on a pair of Nik Sorrell free throws. With the scoreboard reading 53-53, Dakota Ware scored inside at the 32.2 mark to put Greenwood up – and that shot proved to be the game-winner.

Marc Grant and Cade Stinnett each led the Gators with 14 points, while Noah Stansbury finished with 11 points and Ware scored 8. Parker Williams added 6.

Sorrell poured in a game-high 27 points for the Scotties (4-7).

Greenwood will face District 14 foe South Warren at 5:45 p.m. Friday in the semifinal round. Glasgow will meet North Hardin at 7:30 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Glasgow led 7-4 at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter after Sorrell made his first 3-pointer of the night, but Greenwood answered with three quick points to tie it. The Scotties closed the period with a 9-2 run to lead 16-9 after eight minutes of action.

Sam Bowling’s 3 at the 3:56 mark of the second put Glasgow up 22-16, but Stansbury answered with one of his own on the opposite end to bring Greenwood within 22-19. Stinnett’s and-one made it 24-22, but a bucket from Sorrell put the Scotties up 26-22 at halftime.

Stinnett scored inside to tie things at 28-all, but Sorrell knocked down back-to-back triples to give Glasgow a 34-30 lead at the 4:22 mark of the third quarter. Five straight points by Bowling made it 39-33, but Grant answered with two straight 3s to tie it 39-39.

Grant converted an and-one to make it 42-42, but Sorrell responded with a triple to send Glasgow into the fourth leading 45-42.

Ware’s score inside with 4:45 remaining gave Greenwood a 50-49 advantage, and a layup by Stansbury soon after had the Gators up 52-49. Sorrell’s free throws evened things at 53-all, but Ware’s final bucket sent the Gators out on top.
